Welcome Inside The Media Mix. I encourage your blog comments and hope you will join the discussions. As a new blogger, I am working hard to build an audience and engage visitors with solid content. Every blogger loves to see Moderate Blog Comments so I’ve been reluctant to have a stated Blog Commenting Policy (we sure don’t want to DIScourage readers from commenting). But …

Have you added a Blog Commenting Policy?

I’m having a blog management problem that I must get under control. Some visitors commenting on this Blog are using their keywords as Author. There are 97 comments on a post right now awaiting approval. These comments aren’t Spam – that’s a whole ‘nother file. These are just folks (or computer programs) that want to put their keywords in place of name to get a keyword backlink to their website. It’s sad because our "Do-Follow" website uses KeywordLuv which posts your name AND keyword phrase with a backlink.

Blog Link Juice for Commenters

When I converted my blog to WordPress self-hosting, I included lots of Blog Link Juice for commenters. It saddens me that some who are posting aren’t taking advantage of it (or are confused as to how to use it … we’ll get to that in the next post) … and some are trying to "cheat the system" and abuse our Blog (aren’t there always some in every crowd). First things first: Name is required for comment approval. SEO backlink wizards: don’t just start making up names to get comments approved; I also check each URL link so you will be wasting your time as well as mine. Does your Blog have this commenting problem … or am I just a spam and black-hat SEO magnet? (drum roll, please ….)

Blog Commenting Policy:

 

  • This blog is moderated and all blog comments are reviewed before approval.
  • Post commenter must leave at least their first name so we know you aren’t a machine.
  • Blog comments cannot be linked to inappropriate or strictly commercial websites.
  • Off-topic or ‘canned" comments will not be approved. Please mention a Keyword from my post.
  • All links within the body of the comment will be removed.
  • Anything added to our website may be edited or removed by the blog owner.
  • Blog policies are subject to change as needed.

    I use a basic commenting policy. Real names and/or blogs! Regular posters are allowed more leeway, but every comment is reviewed. I catch hundreds of spam comments – and I hate them, but consider that the price to pay!

      Thanks Katrina for giving your thoughts. I’m sorry I shoved SEO Saturday Series to next week. I’m under a tight client deadline and push came to shove.

      I needed an quicker way to spot bogus Comments that don’t get caught by my Spam filter.

      Now the challenge is to get more visitors who are real people, with real opinions and are willing to share … like you!

      Blog comments are Approved very quickly…within minutes if it is within the parameters of our Blog Commenting Policy.
      Glad to see you used KeyWordLUV. Next time you can add your Twitter ID also and folks can follow you directly from your comment. I’m looking for another Twitter plug-in that is clearer. Want to provide as many tools as possible to reward blog commenters!

    When starting my website, I was definitely caught off guard by the endless amount of spam comments. Trying to moderate them is a huge challenge and extremely time consuming. I installed the Akismet plugin for WordPress recently and so far it has stood up to the challenge. There are other options for preventing comment spam and I would definitely recommend checking some of them out because they do a pretty good job.

      Eric, I’ve had the Akismet plugin for months, however I’ve been reluctant to set it up because of the requirements to “get an API key” etc. etc. I will go ahead and set it up.

      I was hopeful that the Spam Filter I have installed would handle it. Gotta say though, and don’t want to jinx it, but since I wrote this I haven’t been seeing the word “Brussels” in my unapproved blog post comments. That’s a relief right there.

        Knock on wood! Hopefully you won’t even need Akismet.

        But if you do, its a pretty simple process getting that API key. Like you, I had the Akismet plugin for a long time without setting it up until finally I couldn’t handle the spam anymore.

        If you’re site doesn’t make any money, its a free plugin (or pay what you want type of download) if your site generates money I think its $5 a month. Worth checking out!

    I receive many spam comments but they are fortunately caught with my Aksimet plugin but I also moderate each comment. Thankfully haven’t received many funky comments but it truly amazes me when I do..don’t these folks have anything better to do? Thanks for your informative post :)

      I agree. I included this note for SEO backlink wizards: don’t just start making up names to get comments approved; I also check each URL link so you will be wasting your time as well as mine.

      It’s sad that some people always have to try to find their way around the system to getting backlinks thru SEO. They could be spending their time doing “best practices” SEO which really would get them where they want to go instead of Black-Hat tricks.

      Hopefully, this is a topic that I won’t discuss much longer.

    I can so relate to this, Linda. I get so tired of dumb spam comments. Thank goodness for Akismet. I have it on both my blogs and it has made all the difference. I still get dumb blog spam. Some of it even makes me laugh. But it all gets trapped in Akismet’s filter. Yay!

    Hi Linda, I use the Akismet plugin and it does catch most of the spam, however, upon occasion I have seen non-spam comments in there. Have you ever literally had a hard time trying to figure out if a comment was actually spam? There are some people out there who are really good at disguising their spam – really a sad state of affairs. BTW – I love this theme – I am using it for one of my clients :) Thanks for sharing your insights!

      Hey Julie. Thanks for coming by. I have activated Akismet plugin now and hope it will take care of words like brussels. Last night I had a ton with backlinks all to google or facebook or yahoo or whatever. Ugh. Yes, sometimes it is hard to figure out if a comment is spam and of course I’d rather not have to. It would not do your computer any good to be going to spammy links – no telling what you might run into. If you figured out how to use the SlideShow option in the top but with scrolling Blog Post snippets, I’d love for you to share! I didn’t finish that section and my website doesn’t lend itself to the cool slideshow. Also, I’m not real fond of the look of Comments in this Theme compared to many I have seen. But it’s new and I keep plugging away in between client projects.

      You can see that my Blog Commenting Policy is very simple. I’m all about not restricting the flow. But enough was enough and I just want to spend less time approving comments and weeding out trash. I did go thru lots of Blog Comment Policies before I posted mine. I left it subject to revision in case I need to add some elements in the future. Thanks for visiting AND commenting!

    As I roll over each blogs on the search engines result page, I’ve still seen lots of keyword in the name field though that blog already contains a KeywordLuv plug-in. These people are really hard-headed. They are obviously taking advantage and annoys us as well. I love KeywordLuv because I can properly address the person whom I want to interact with.

    Most people should learn that in leaving comments traffic should be off the point. Of course, we all want massive traffic generated to our site but more important to that we should respect the author of the site by paying attention to what he/she says and leaving well-thought remarks.Backlink will follow when you build relationship with the author and using the KeywordLuv, trust me your site will be promoted.       Thanks, Penny. Update on the Spammy issue. The minute I activated Akismet back in August, my moderating chores got so much easier. The API key is very simple and well worth dropping everything to set up. Do I still see fishy things from time to time? Yes, but my blog is not overwhelmed with trash any longer. Anyone who hasn’t added Akismet Spam Blocker, I highly recommend you do a Google Search and learn more. I couldn’t endorse it more highly.

All the worse since it is on the Blog Commenting Policy post that clearly says you must have a name. I visited your website and thought it was really well done so decided to approve the comment.
